Help new staff settle in.

Starting a new job is both exhilarating and daunting at the same time. Here are ways to welcome, support new staff as they settle in.

  1. Offer multiple tour guides. Have more than one team member give new staff the lay of the land. Different perspectives help new staff get to know colleagues and gain valuable insight into the organization's culture, available resources, and common uses of the office space.

  2. Nest the workspace. Frames for photos of family and friends. A potted plant. Helpful books. An interesting mug. These simple items help make new staff comfortable and welcome.

  3. Make introductions. By spending time with functional team members, e.g. accounting, IT, marketing, etc., new staff gain insight into how everyone supports business operations—including the work they’ll do. In addition, new staff members will learn whom to go to for the resources they need to be successful.

  4. Schedule community time. Schedule time to talk shop less and chitchat more. Chat about things, hobbies, and people in your life, and appreciate what you discover about your current and new team members.

  5. Point to professional development. Schedule time for new staff to meet with HR to learn about professional development opportunities. Provide support as they fold these company benefits into their individual career plan.
