What is CareerLog?
As a concept, CareerLog is a journal of your work experience and professional contribution. As a real aspect of your life, CareerLog is a living, active record of who you are as a professional. It constantly serves to position you in the direction you want to go in your career.
Who is CareerLog for?
CareerLog is for career-oriented individuals who want to understand the attributes and principles that, when put into practice, help them move ahead in their professional life. CareerLog for:
- A student who's transitioning from school life to their first professional job.
- Someone who is planning a career change--either within, up, or out of their current line of work or professional field.
- A seasoned professional who took a needed sabbatical--for example, to raise a child or care for a sick or elderly relative--and is now ready to re-enter the workforce.
These are career paths that many people are on. Each path has it's own set of challenges. How does CareerLog help?
You're a subject worth studying.
Studying a subject matter is very important to getting ahead in school and in building relationships that are important to us. However, when it comes to ourselves, we want to believe that we already know everything there is to know and that it's unnecessary to devote time to studying what makes us the people we are.
We want to believe we have the power to mentally note and the ability to readily recall whatever we need to communicate about ourselves. Sadly, this myth is shattered the moment we flounder during an interview or underestimate ourselves while negotiating a starting salary or a project fee. As humans, we fail ourselves all the time--with regret. However, not enough regret to stop fighting against the power of studying ourselves just as diligently as we would a subject in school or a new job opportunity that's essential to our professional future.
Writing and recalling information.
There are several benefits to studying--specifically writing things down and recalling information. Writing helps you:
- Gather wandering thoughts, give them attention, and put them to action.
- Add weight to your goals and make them important to you. This, in turn, makes you more attentive to opportunities and resources that help you achieve your goals.
- Properly channel emotions that come with a situation and stay focused on the objectives at hand.
Careerlog is all about studying our professional selves. In essence, it's a journal that you can fill in, carry around, and keep close as a constant log of your career--long after you submit a version of your resume or file away an outdated performance review. It's a place to to map out your plan, track your path, and capture all of the good stuff in between. We get to know ourselves all over again each time we complete an application or update our resume. Why not continually stay honest and in the moment about the great things you bring to the table?
